U.S. Route 550: Durango to New Mexico – Colorado

Take a scenic ride through the rugged Four Corners region as we follow a 16-mile stretch of U.S. Route 550 from south of Durango, Colorado, to the New Mexico state line. This short but meaningful drive begins where US-160 intersects with US-550 and heads south through the open lands of La Plata County, offering a glimpse into Colorado’s high desert as we slowly descend toward the New Mexico border.

Leaving the junction with US-160 behind, we pass the outskirts of Durango’s southern developments. This area has grown steadily in recent years, with residential enclaves and commercial hubs dotting the landscape, yet it never fully loses its wild edge. As we glide southward, the La Plata Mountains retreat behind us, giving way to a plateau of juniper-dotted hills and wide-open skies. The character of the road here is steady and well-traveled, with gentle curves and long, open stretches ideal for settling into a quiet rhythm.

The final few miles toward the state line are some of the most peaceful on this corridor. Traffic lightens, and the highway stretches ahead in an unbroken ribbon across a gently undulating landscape.
