Oklahoma Highway 51: Stillwater to Mannford

Hop in with us for a 44-mile drive across north-central Oklahoma as we follow Oklahoma Highway 51 from Stillwater to Mannford. This stretch offers a mix of city bustle, small-town charm, and open prairie views, capped off with a scenic crossing of Keystone Lake.

Our journey begins in Stillwater, the home of Oklahoma State University and the famed Boone Pickens Stadium. We pick up OK-51 heading east from its junction with US-177, known locally as 6th Street through the heart of town. This portion of the route is a four-lane divided urban highway, lined with fast food joints, hotels, and campus-related traffic. It’s a busy stretch, especially on game days, but it quickly quiets down as we leave the city limits behind.

Once we’re outside Stillwater, OK-51 narrows and transitions into a more rural, two-lane highway. We roll past wide-open farmland and fields dotted with cattle, a classic Oklahoma landscape. At the small intersection with OK-108, near the rural community of Ripley, we continue eastward through quiet countryside until reaching Yale. Here, we cross OK-18 and glide into town on Chicago Avenue. Though we barely slow down, Yale has a notable place in American history as the childhood home of legendary athlete Jim Thorpe. The Jim Thorpe Home is a small museum worth a stop if you’re not in a hurry—though in our video, we keep on moving.

Shortly after Yale, we enter the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, where the rolling plains give way to slightly more wooded terrain. We pass the junction with OK-99 near the community of Drumright (though the town itself lies a bit south), and the road begins to gently curve and undulate through the landscape. It’s not mountainous by any means, but the elevation changes add interest to the drive.

As we approach Mannford, the highway meets OK-48 at a large intersection just before town. Mannford, a small lake town rebuilt after a massive flood in the 1960s, has grown up around Keystone Lake—a popular recreational area for fishing, boating, and camping. We drive through town on Tower Boulevard, the main commercial strip, before crossing a bridge over a scenic arm of Keystone Lake. The lake crossing is a highlight of the drive, especially near sunset when the water reflects the sky in brilliant color.

We end our journey at the interchange with Oklahoma Highway 151, which provides access to Keystone State Park and the Keystone Dam, as well as a route toward Sand Springs and the greater Tulsa area.
