Arkansas Highway 229: Traskwood to Poyen

If you’re up for a short but scenic drive through the heart of Grant County, Arkansas, this stretch of Arkansas Highway 229 from Traskwood to Poyen is a solid little ride. Spanning roughly 10 miles, this segment carries us south through a mix of rural woodlands, quiet homesteads, and small-town charm. It may not be the most famous stretch of road in Arkansas, but it offers a peaceful backroad experience away from the hustle and bustle of the larger highways.

We begin our journey in Traskwood, a small community nestled in Saline County just southwest of Benton. The road kicks off at the intersection with Traskwood Road, where we hop onto AR-229 heading south. The landscape here is typical of central Arkansas—rolling hills blanketed with pines and hardwoods, interrupted occasionally by open meadows and the occasional farmhouse. Shortly after leaving town, the highway curves southeast before straightening out once more to resume its southward course. Traffic is light, making this a great route for a leisurely drive or even a scenic motorcycle run.

As we continue down AR-229, we pass through Fenter, a small but historic community known in the past for its ties to the local timber and rail industries. There’s not much commercial activity in Fenter these days, but its quiet setting and rural surroundings make it feel like a step back in time. South of Fenter, the highway cuts through more wooded areas and crosses several small creeks as we gradually approach Poyen. Just before reaching town, you might spot remnants of old homesteads and barns tucked back among the trees—silent witnesses to a slower-paced way of life.

The road gently rolls into Poyen, a close-knit town that prides itself on its strong school system and community values. AR-229 concludes its journey at the intersection with U.S. Route 270, which offers connections east toward Sheridan or west toward Malvern and Hot Springs. If you’re looking to extend your trip, US-270 opens up plenty of additional options, from state parks and lakes to charming downtown districts.

Whether you’re exploring the backroads for fun, commuting between small towns, or just passing through, the Traskwood to Poyen segment of Highway 229 delivers a pleasant slice of rural Arkansas. It’s a great reminder that sometimes the best drives aren’t always on the interstates—they’re on roads like this one, where the journey itself is the destination.
