Arkansas Highway 227: Lake Ouachita State Park to Piney

If you’re looking for a scenic, easygoing drive that blends lake views, forest landscapes, and a dash of local history, Arkansas Highway 227 from Lake Ouachita State Park to Piney is a perfect choice. This 12-mile route takes us south through a stretch of the Ouachita Mountains that’s packed with natural beauty and a few hidden gems just off the pavement.

Our drive begins right at the heart of Lake Ouachita State Park, just outside the visitors center—a popular jumping-off point for exploring one of Arkansas’s largest and cleanest lakes. The park itself is a haven for boaters, anglers, hikers, and anyone who loves the water. As we ease out of the park, Highway 227 quickly gets into its groove: tight turns, gentle hills, and plenty of tree canopy. It’s a classic Arkansas forest drive, and during spring or fall, the changing leaves are worth the trip all by themselves. Keep an eye out for wildlife and the occasional glimpse of the lake through the trees.

Just a few miles down the road, we reach the intersection with Arkansas Highway 192—a good place to detour if you’re interested in some off-the-beaten-path exploration. From here, we roll into Mountain Pine, a small town with deep roots in Arkansas’s timber industry. While it’s a quieter community these days, you’ll still spot reminders of its logging past. At the main intersection in town, we hang a left onto Highway 190, continuing our southern journey toward Piney.

The last half of the route is packed with quick access to some standout attractions. First up is the entrance to the Mid-America Science Museum, a must-visit for families or anyone who loves hands-on learning and outdoor exhibits. A little further down, you’ll also spot National Park College, adding a bit of campus energy to the rural setting. As we approach Piney, the scenery starts to shift—a few more houses, signs of suburbia, and the road straightens out before reaching its end at the busy junction with U.S. Highway 270, just on the edge of Hot Springs. From here, you’re just minutes away from all the sights, shops, and bathhouses that make Hot Springs famous.
