Interstate 95: New Hampshire – Northbound

Join us as we drive America’s Highways for about 16 miles north along Interstate 95 through the short but vital stretch of this major East Coast route in New Hampshire.

We kick off our northbound cruise right at the Massachusetts–New Hampshire state line, seamlessly transitioning onto I-95 just south of Seabrook. This opening leg quickly immerses us in a classic New England coastal corridor: think dense woodlands on either side, a whiff of salty Atlantic air not too far off, and a consistent hum of traffic that reminds us just how crucial this interstate is for travelers connecting Boston and points north.

Rolling through Seabrook and Hampton Falls, I-95 here keeps things straightforward—broad lanes, smooth pavement, and service plazas to refuel both cars and passengers. One notable spot to keep an eye out for is the junction with NH-101 near Hampton. This interchange is a key connector for beachgoers and locals alike, whisking drivers eastward to Hampton Beach’s lively boardwalk or westward to New Hampshire’s interior.

Beyond Hampton, the scenery begins to hint at the coastal marshlands and inlets that define the lower Piscataqua River region. As we approach Portsmouth, the highway transforms from a rural bypass into a critical urban link. Portsmouth itself is one of New England’s most charming small cities, packed with historic brick buildings, shipyards, and bustling local shops. Although we stick to the highway in this run, it’s tempting to exit and explore the cobblestone streets of Market Square or grab a seafood lunch along the waterfront.

In quick succession, we navigate the interchanges with U.S. Highway 1 and U.S. Highway 4—major arteries feeding local and regional traffic into the city center and toward the University of New Hampshire. Just north of town, we approach the highlight of this segment: the crossing of the Piscataqua River. This bridge not only marks the state line but also serves up sweeping views of Portsmouth Harbor and the shipyards below. It’s a signature scene for anyone traveling between New Hampshire and Maine.

Crossing the river, we officially wrap up our northbound journey on Interstate 95 in New Hampshire as we roll into Maine, ready to continue exploring the coastal route deeper into Vacationland.
