Rest Areas: Interstate 40 East – Big Piney Rest Area – Mile 67 – Arkansas 🅿️ 🚻 🚮

Take a scenic break from the rolling hills of western Arkansas as we pull off Interstate 40 at Mile 67 to visit the Big Piney Tourist Information Center and Rest Area. Situated just west of Russellville, this thoughtfully designed stop offers more than your typical roadside amenities—it’s a welcome pause within the heart of the Arkansas River Valley, nestled amidst the foothills of the Ozark National Forest.

Arriving from the east, we leave behind the suburban bustle of Russellville and its connection to Arkansas Tech University, entering a more pastoral landscape. The interstate traces gentle curves and low ridges characteristic of the area, with glimpses of distant forested hills appearing through the breaks in the trees. As we crest a small rise near the 67-mile marker, the Big Piney Rest Area comes into view, inviting travelers with its clean lines, modern facilities, and the promise of a restful stop. Reconstructed in mid-2017, this rest area serves as both a practical rest stop and a welcoming visitor center, showcasing regional tourism highlights through well-stocked information kiosks.

Stepping out of the vehicle, we’re greeted by the crisp scent of pine mingling with the fresh air of the Ozarks. Shaded picnic tables and landscaped pet areas encourage a relaxed break, while wide sidewalks offer a chance to stretch our legs. Inside, the tourist center boasts bright, modern restrooms and vending machines stocked with road trip staples. The visitor displays highlight local attractions—suggesting side trips to Lake Dardanelle State Park, the Arkansas Wine Trail, or scenic detours up the famed Arkansas Highway 7, recognized as one of the most beautiful drives in America.

Continuing westbound from the rest area, the highway begins its gradual ascent toward the Ozark Highlands. Beyond the rest area, the Big Piney Creek itself runs parallel to the interstate, lending the rest area its name. Though not visible from the highway, the creek carves a series of lush, forested hollows just north of the route—popular with anglers and paddlers alike. The terrain becomes progressively more rugged as we head further into Johnson County, with the hills gaining height and the forest canopy thickening, hinting at the wild beauty that awaits travelers who choose to explore beyond the asphalt ribbon of I-40.

The Big Piney Rest Area is more than a quick bathroom break—it’s a small introduction to Arkansas’ natural charm and hospitality. Whether we’re continuing east toward Little Rock or westbound toward Fort Smith, it’s a reminder that the journey is just as enriching as the destination, especially when we take the time to savor these quiet moments amid the timeless beauty of the Natural State.
