Join us as we drive America’s highways for a quick but essential 2-mile stretch along University Avenue southbound in Little Rock, Arkansas. Starting at the busy interchange with Interstate 630 in midtown, this drive gives us a close look at one of the city’s major north-south corridors and its connection to one of Arkansas’s largest universities.
Continuing southward, University Avenue opens up into a more mixed-use corridor as we pass through the 20s and 30s blocks. This area sees a blend of older residential neighborhoods tucked just behind the main drag, with signs of recent reinvestment evident in improved medians, new signage, and traffic-calming designs. By the time we reach the 36th Street intersection, we’re on the doorstep of the University District—a long-term city planning initiative focused on revitalizing the area surrounding the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR). The neighborhood here is transitioning, with new apartment developments, student housing, and small businesses aiming to support the academic community nearby.
We end our route at the signalized intersection with University Drive—the entrance road to UALR itself. Spanning over 250 acres, UALR serves as a central hub of education and research in Central Arkansas. It’s home to the William H. Bowen School of Law, the Donaghey College of STEM, and the UA Little Rock Trojans. From this point, drivers can turn into campus or continue further south toward Colonel Glenn Road and the University Crossing Shopping Center, depending on their destination.
While this drive is short in terms of distance, it connects some of Little Rock’s most important civic and educational landmarks, and it serves as a backbone for city life in the Midtown and University District areas. It’s a quick snapshot of urban evolution in a city where commercial sprawl, residential neighborhoods, and higher education meet.
