There are some drives in Arkansas that feel like they belong in a movie, and the short stretch of Arkansas Highway 187 between Beaver and Eureka Springs is definitely one of them. Starting out in the quaint riverside town of Beaver, we hop on AR-187 right at Beaver Park and head east. Before we’ve even had a chance to settle in, we’re treated to the iconic “Golden Gate Bridge of Arkansas” — the historic one-lane suspension bridge that spans the White River. It’s not just a crossing, it’s a rite of passage for anyone exploring this part of the Ozarks, and if you’re a fan of quirky roadside Americana, it’s an absolute must-see (and a favorite for photographers).
Once we leave the charm of Beaver behind, Highway 187 quickly winds its way through a patchwork of rolling hills and dense forest typical of the northwest corner of Arkansas. Almost immediately, we skirt the northern edge of Holiday Island, a lakeside community popular for its golf courses, fishing, and relaxed resort vibes. If you’re up for a detour, Holiday Island’s marina and recreation areas make a great pit stop to stretch your legs or snap some lakefront photos. For much of this short drive, you’re surrounded by the natural beauty that the Ozarks are famous for — think lush greenery, rocky outcrops, and glimpses of Table Rock Lake to the north if you know where to look.
The ride wraps up at the eastern terminus of AR-187, meeting up with the renowned Arkansas Highway 23, otherwise known as the Pig Trail Scenic Byway. That means the adventure doesn’t have to end here — from this intersection, you’re perfectly placed to continue exploring Eureka Springs with its famous Victorian downtown, historic hotels, and vibrant arts scene, or keep heading south on the Pig Trail for some of the best motorcycle curves in the state. No matter your ride, this short route is a little slice of northwest Arkansas that packs in far more scenery and charm than you’d expect from just three miles of pavement.
