Looking for a straightforward but surprisingly scenic drive across the Missouri Bootheel? Join us as we travel 16 miles west on U.S. Highway 412, connecting the small towns of Hayti and Kennett in the heart of southeastern Missouri. Whether you’re a road tripper looking for a quick detour or a local just out for a spin, this route is a solid reminder of why America’s highways are about more than just getting from A to B—they’re about the journey itself.
Our journey kicks off at the western end of Interstate 155, right on the outskirts of Hayti. U.S. Highway 412 picks up the baton here, seamlessly taking over where the interstate leaves off. Almost immediately, we bypass the main part of Hayti, with Hayti Heights visible just to our northeast. This stretch is a great example of how these U.S. highways manage to skirt around the edges of town, keeping traffic flowing smoothly for through-travelers but still close enough for those who want to pop off for a quick bite or explore local flavor.
As we roll on, the highway meets up with Missouri Route 84 at a key intersection. Here, our route shifts from a northwesterly path to a true westward run, straight across the flat and fertile farmland that defines much of the Bootheel. This area is classic southeast Missouri—wide open skies, big agricultural fields, and the occasional farmstead dotting the landscape. During planting and harvest seasons, you’ll likely see tractors, crop dusters, and the rhythm of rural life on full display right from your car window.
Travelers with a little extra time might consider a short detour: Hayti itself, although bypassed by the highway, offers a couple of local diners and antique shops worth checking out. If you’re into history, the nearby Caruthersville riverfront (just a few miles east on I-155) is another interesting stop, offering views of the Mississippi River and the Caruthersville Bridge—a key crossing between Missouri and Tennessee.
Back on 412, after about 14 miles of arrow-straight highway, we approach Kennett, the largest town in Dunklin County. Entering Kennett, we pass the intersection with Missouri Route 25, which can take you north towards Malden if you’re feeling adventurous. Just before reaching the end of our drive, we pull over for a quick fuel stop—because even short road trips deserve a break! The journey wraps up a block later at the junction with Missouri Route 84 west, right in the heart of Kennett.
Along this entire route, you’ll experience the subtle charm of southeast Missouri—simple, laid-back, and full of little roadside moments that make the drive worthwhile. While it may not be a mountain pass or a coastal highway, there’s a unique appeal here that’s all about rural Americana.
